Allergy Related Sinusitis

Allergy Related SinusitisChronic sinusitis is defined as an inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for 12 weeks or longer and doesn’t respond to treatment. It is frequently caused by allergens, particularly pollen and dust, which cause the lining of the nasal tissues to swell, blocking the airway passages and causing a variety of cold-like symptoms.

When your immune system perceives a hostile invader, it produces a chemical called histamines that are released through your bloodstream. These cause swelling of the tissues lining the sinuses, leading to a runny nose, stuffy nose, sinus pain and pressure, fever, coughing, headaches, fatigue and bad breath.

A variety of different allergens can cause this type of exaggerated immune system response. Pollens, mold, dust mites, smoke, pet dander, food, chemicals and medications are some of the more common triggers.

Treatment Options

In order to confirm a diagnosis, your doctor will give you a physical exam and may order tests to isolate the allergen trigger causing you distress. Allergy skin or blood testing is helpful in pinpointing this.

Avoiding the substance responsible for your symptoms is the best way of managing chronic sinusitis caused by allergies, but isn’t always possible. Home remedies can help alleviate your symptoms; a warm, moist washcloth pressed to your face can bring instant relief from pain and swelling.

Be sure to drink lots of fluids and use a humidifier to moisten the air. If these remedies don’t work, allergy shots (immunotherapy) may offer long-term relief. Your doctor will know which solution is best for you.
